Millimetre wave spectroscopy of high Rydberg states

چکیده
We have recently developed high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet laser sources and combined these with millimetre waves in double-resonance experiments to achieve a spectral resolution of up to 60 kHz in the spectra of high Rydberg states. The article describes the main features of our experimentalprocedure and presents studies in which we have used millimetre wave spectroscopy (a) to obtain information on the energy level structure, including the spin±orbit and hyper®ne structure, of atomic Rydberg states at high principal quantum numbers n, (b) to record spectrally resolved spectra of the high Rydberg states (n ¶ 100) detected in pulsed-®eld-ionization zero-kinetic-energy photoelectron spectra, (c) to measure stray electric ®elds and ion concentrations in the gas phase, (d) to test and improve the selectivity of the electric ®eld ionization of high Rydberg states and (e) to observe for the ®rst time the hyper®ne structure in high-n, low-l molecular Rydberg states.

Microwave spectroscopy of Al I Rydberg states: F terms
Energy level separations in high-lying Rydberg states of neutral aluminium have been measured by a two-photon millimetre-wave resonance method to obtain n 2F–(n + 1) 2F intervals for n = 29–37 with an accuracy ±1 MHz. An Al atomic beam was excited stepwise by pulsed lasers, and the Rydberg atoms were detected by state-selective field ionization. From these data and previous optical data for the...
متن کاملChirped-pulse millimeter-wave spectroscopy of Rydberg-Rydberg transitions.
Transitions between Rydberg states of Ca atoms, in a pulsed, supersonic atomic beam, are directly detected by chirped-pulse millimeter-wave spectroscopy. Broadband, high-resolution spectra with accurate relative intensities are recorded instantly. Free induction decay (FID) of atoms, polarized by the chirped pulse, at their Rydberg-Rydberg transition frequencies, is heterodyne detected, average...
متن کاملChirped-pulse millimeter-wave spectroscopy: spectrum, dynamics, and manipulation of Rydberg-Rydberg transitions.
We apply the chirped-pulse millimeter-wave (CPmmW) technique to transitions between Rydberg states in calcium atoms. The unique feature of Rydberg-Rydberg transitions is that they have enormous electric dipole transition moments (~5 kiloDebye at n* ~ 40, where n* is the effective principal quantum number), so they interact strongly with the mm-wave radiation. After polarization by a mm-wave pul...
متن کاملTowards measuring the ionisation and dissociation energies of molecular hydrogen with sub-MHz accuracy.
The most precise determination of the ionisation and dissociation energies of molecular hydrogen H2 was carried out recently by measuring three intervals independently: the X --> EF interval, the EF --> n = 54p interval, and the electron binding energy of the n = 54p Rydberg state. The values of the ionisation and dissociation energies obtained for H2, and for HD and D2 in similar measurements,...
